For me, access means that everyone has the same op For me, access means that everyone has the same opportunity to access the same health care resources, in this case birth control.

I am excited to be a part of the NYBCAP Associate Board because I am aware that there are massive inequities all over New York State when it comes to accessing birth control and reproductive care.

My interest in reforming the health care system in any way that I can is motivated by personal experience. It was because of a close friend, who was struggling to access birth control, that I wanted to get involved in a movement like NYBCAP. As a teenager I was not educated about birth control and under the impression that it was only used by people that didn’t want to get pregnant. I have a friend who had many barriers when trying to access birth control. Hearing about her struggle motivated me to advocate for increased access.

All New Yokers deserve to have access to birth control. -Jillian

For me, access is being informed about the differe For me, access is being informed about the different uses for birth control so others can look out for their future self like I did.

Finding out uterine cancer runs in my family was difficult to process. My great grandmother, grandmother and mom had uterine cancer. After hearing that a prevention method for uterine cancer can be birth control, I began to explore my options. I've made an appointment to consult with Planned Parenthood about the choices I have.

I was inspired to become a part of the NYBCAP Associate Board to have an opportunity to make tangible changes in reproductive healthcare. I’ve learned that birth control is more than pregnancy prevention and want other people to learn that too.

For me, access means providing birth control to pa For me, access means providing birth control to patients who ask for it, regardless of their age and without requiring parental consent.

At a young age I had irregular periods due to hormone imbalances. To regulate my period my doctor suggested that I try birth control. However, my parents decided this wasn’t the option for me. Partly because of the mistrust of the medical community by the minority community my parents are a part of and partly because I was under the age of 18.

Since then, in search of the right birth control for me, I’ve tried the pill, patch and shot. After realizing those options weren’t right for me a family planning doctor suggested an IUD. Once I learned more about the benefits of a copper IUD I gave it a try, because it sounded like a method that would work for my body and fit my lifestyle.

I was 19 years old at the time, but when I went to my health care provider they said I needed my parent’s consent because I was covered by their insurance. I waited until I was 21 years old to go back to my health care provider to get the copper IUD. Patients should not be refused the medical care they are seeking.

For me, access means nothing stands in the way of For me, access means nothing stands in the way of making autonomous decisions, basic needs are met and information to make informed decisions.

I am the manager of @FilltheGapProj, a resource distribution and reproductive justice education project. This year, I joined the associate board of NYBCAP to work with other young organizers expanding access to contraceptives across New York State. Reproductive justice, especially access centered work, means that your work is interconnected with many other aspects of life.

A person cannot exercise reproductive autonomy while experiencing housing insecurity, climate crisis, food insecurity and/or state sanctioned racial violence. A person is denied their right to reproductive autonomy every time their conditions force them to make reproductive decisions in survival mode. The economic barriers to various types of contraceptives, such as emergency contraception and the pill, make both largely inaccessible to poor and working class people.

There are also unique cultural experiences that lead to huge gaps in knowledge of contraceptives and a willingness to explore available options. For example, Puerto Ricans suffering under U.S. imperialism were the subjects of the experimentation that gave us the birth control pill. The so-called "father of gynecology" only achieved that status by experimenting on Black enslaved people.

The struggle for access must be a trauma-informed, political practice centered around restoring colonized and exploited people's bodily autonomy.
